Why Novo Nordisk Ended Work From Home

Novo Nordisk, the big Danish drug company, has decided that all its employees must now work from the office full-time. This means no more regular work-from-home options. The new CEO made this rule because the company is facing big challenges falling sales, job cuts, and tough competition.

Job Cuts and Falling Market Value

Just a day before this announcement, Novo Nordisk said it would cut 9,000 jobs, about 8% of its global staff. The company has also lost about ₹37.35 lakh crore in market value since mid-2024. One main reason is that sales of its famous weight-loss drug Wegovy have slowed down, while rival company Eli Lilly is gaining ground with its drug Mounjaro.

The company explained that bringing everyone back to the office will help employees:

Before this, work-from-home rules were different in different offices and departments. There was no single global policy.

Employee and Union Reaction

However, not everyone is happy. Denmark’s HK Privat union, which represents many Novo employees, criticized the decision. Its chair, Kim Jung Olsen, said that office work and remote work could have existed together. He added that it’s sad for employees who enjoyed some flexibility.

Novo Nordisk did say that workers can still talk to their managers to make special agreements, meaning there might be a little flexibility in some cases.

Competition in the Obesity Drug Market

This change comes at a very important time for the company. Novo and Eli Lilly are the two main players in the fast-growing obesity drug market. But competition is getting tougher, and Novo’s management believes that in-person teamwork is necessary to act faster and beat rivals.

But many employees around the world still prefer flexibility. Surveys show that flexible work is a key factor in keeping workers happy and loyal. In industries like pharmaceuticals, where top scientific talent is in demand, strict office rules could push employees to leave for competitors.

For Novo Nordisk, combining job cuts and the end of remote work has made staff nervous. Some experts warn this could hurt morale when the company really needs to keep its best people.
