If you are a fresher looking for jobs, LinkedIn is your best friend. Many of us create a LinkedIn account just for the sake of it but never make it strong. Today, I will share simple and practical tips with examples to build a powerful LinkedIn profile even if you are just out of college.
I have written it in simple words, so you can understand easily and apply it today itself.
1. Why LinkedIn is Important for Freshers?
First of all, LinkedIn is not just for experienced people. Recruiters search for freshers on LinkedIn every day. According to LinkedIn India, 75% of hiring managers use LinkedIn to find candidates.
For example, my friend Riya, a BBA student, got her internship in HR through a recruiter who found her LinkedIn profile… she didn’t even apply anywhere.
2. Use a Clear Profile Photo
Don’t keep selfies with your friends, mirror selfies, or stylish poses. Keep a clear headshot photo with a neutral background, formal shirt or kurta, and a simple smile.
Example:
Good photo: Sitting on a chair wearing formal shirt, facing straight, plain background
Bad photo: College farewell group photo cropped to show only your face

Write a Catchy Headline
Most freshers write “Student at XYZ College”. Instead write something that shows your skills and goals.
Examples:
❌ Student at Delhi University
✅ B.Com Student | Aspiring Financial Analyst | Excel & Tally Skilled
❌ B.Tech CSE Student
✅ B.Tech CSE | Learning Python & Web Development | Looking for Software Internships
This makes you look confident and clear about your goals.

4. Craft a Strong ‘About’ Section
Your About section is like your elevator pitch. Write in simple English, about:
Who you are
What you are studying
What you are passionate about
Skills you are learning
Your career goals
Example:
I am a final year B.Tech student from Chandigarh University, passionate about data analysis and business intelligence. Currently learning SQL, Excel, and Power BI. I love solving data problems and making meaningful reports. Looking for internships or entry-level opportunities in data analysis.
Write it in your natural words. Don’t try to copy fancy lines. Keep it real and honest.
5. Add Your Education Properly
Under the Education section, mention your:
College name and degree
Duration (year of joining – year of passing)
Activities or societies you participated in
Example:
Delhi University | B.Com (Hons) | 2020 – 2023
Activities: Finance Club Member, College Fest Volunteer
This shows you were an active student, not just attending classes and going home.
6. If you have done any online courses, add them. For example:
Excel for Beginners – Udemy – Completed June 2023
Python Programming – Coursera – Completed March 2023
AWS Cloud Practitioner – AWS Skill Builder – Completed January 2024
It does not matter if it was free or paid. Recruiters see your self-learning attitude.
You can find free courses on:

7. Build Your Skills Section
Add skills related to your career goals
Examples:
If you are an MBA student: Marketing Strategy, Market Research, Sales, Excel
If you are a CS student: C++, Java, Data Structures, SQL, Python
Don’t randomly add skills like singing, dancing etc. Keep it career focused.
8. Request Recommendations
As a fresher, you might not have work experience, but you can request recommendations from your professors, internship mentors, or project guides.
Example message to request recommendation:
Hello Sir, I really enjoyed working under you during my summer internship. If you find it suitable, could you please write a small recommendation for me on LinkedIn mentioning my work in the project? It will help me in my future job applications.
9. Share Content Regularly
Don’t think LinkedIn is only for job posts. Share:
Your learning journey
Projects you built
Certifications you completed
Interview preparation tips
College fest experiences
Example post:
Just completed my SQL certification from Coursera. Learned how to create complex queries, joins, and subqueries. Excited to apply these skills in data analysis projects. #SQL #Learning
Write in simple words like you are talking to your juniors. It builds your personal brand.
10. Connect with People Strategically
Don’t send random requests to everyone. Send requests with a note:
Example note:
Hi Ma’am, I am a final year B.Tech student passionate about Machine Learning. I follow your posts regularly. Would love to connect and learn from your experiences.
Connect with:
HRs and recruiters
Industry professionals in your field
Alumni of your college
11. Keep Your Profile Updated
If you do a new internship, project, or course update your LinkedIn immediately.
Example:
If you did an internship in May 2024, add it in Experience section with:
Company: ABC Pvt Ltd
Role: Data Analyst Intern
Duration: May 2024 – July 2024
Description: Built dashboards using Power BI to visualise sales data and created automated Excel reports for weekly meetings.
12. Avoid These Common Mistakes
Spelling errors in profile
Incomplete sections
Irrelevant or casual photos
Copy-paste about section from internet
Sending connection requests without notes
Final Words
Bhai, LinkedIn pe strong rehna zaruri hai (it is important to stay strong on LinkedIn). If you follow these simple steps with the examples above:
Good photo
Catchy headline
Strong about section
Education and certifications
Relevant skills
Recommendations
Regular content sharing
Strategic networking
Then, your LinkedIn profile will start working for you even when you are sleeping.
